Questing Path Redux

Blessed Summer Solstice!  As a Solstice gift to all of you I’d like to offer up something that I’ve been working on since before Beltane.

Back on Beltane, guided by intuition and, I believe, spiritual nudging, I felt the urge to look once again at my Pathway Spread. In meditation space, at the heart of my glen, I held the issues I had with the spread in the forefront of my thoughts. As I looked at it and asked for guidance I heard/felt something like, “Don’t you think it’s too focused on facing difficulty?” This was an interesting thought and as I traveled down it I realized it was correct. I set about streamlining the spread and on Beltane evening I sat down with the new spread.

Upon completion it “felt” better, more supportive. The spread was originally a 7 card spread with one mid-points of navigation between the starting point and the destination. Then, I modified it slightly to include 2 mid-points of navigation moving the number up to 8 cards total. The issue became that there were also 2 Challenges cards as part of the spread as well. If the 2 navigation points came up with difficult cards then the spread could have a total of 4 “challenging” cards against 2 allies, a beginning and a destination. No wonder it felt so heavy!

Coming out of meditation, I got to work in redesigning the spread, streamlining it and focusing on support and forward movement instead of obstacles. The card reduction came back down to 7 which I prefer and took me back to the original inspiration on the spread. Also, the supportive cards are now 4 in number instead of 2. Beltane evening, I gave the spread it’s first test run with my destination being the Summer Solstice. Over the following 2 months I was incredibly pleased with the results and the accuracy of the new spread.

I’m happy to present the “New” Questing Path Spread or, what I’m calling it, the Questing Path Redux.

So you kind readers will not have to go clicking back through past posts, I’ll include the full write up below of all the positions and what they mean. You’ll note the layout order of the draws has changed slightly. Otherwise, not much of these have changed but I’d rather present it all together as one package!

Solstice, The Questing Path Spread and Rebirth

So, before I try to sum up the end of my last Questing Path Spread, I need to say that I will not be doing another one for awhile.  I think it may need a label that says “Use with Caution.  This spread can cause immense change.”

Perhaps it is because I designed the spread and so have more of a connection to it?  Perhaps it’s just the timing and synchronicity of everything that goes all the way back to the Summer and my Spirit Quest?  The main reason I won’t be doing it again for awhile is that, well, I need a break!  The last two have also been very intense and life changing.  This last one, done in the middle of a Samhain night, has been even more of the same.

I am beginning to think that the spread holds a considerable amount of energy and potential which can really drain a person who tries to do a Questing Path over and over again. I feel that the Questing Path Spread might only need to be done once a year at most.  I will need to go back and add an addendum to the explanatory posts!

I finished my Questing Path today and you can go back to look at the initial post here and the only follow-up here.  I had started a post to talk about the second marker of The Lovers, The Pole Star and the Guardian but, well, I ran out of time and energy.  The sheer amount of change and intense realignment that has come about since Samhain has been very hard to describe.  In the interest of time, I am going to assume you’ve read the other two posts and I will hit the high points that have occurred since the first marker of the spread.

  • I initiated a career change shortly after Thanksgiving
  • Found a new job at a location I’ve been trying to get into for five years one week later.  Better hours, better pay, benefits and, eventually retirement.  The job will free my energy up as well to get back to my writings and work here.  I start at the beginning of the calendar year.
  • Was led to a book that worked, essentially, like a key in a lock which unlocked numerous and different spiritual ideas and beliefs and gave me a solid footing to engage them all.
  • Began the ideas of the book, including it into my daily practice and spiritual work on December 1st.
  • Finally identified the Lover’s card on my path and realized it was about something much, much larger than I had expected.  It involved the eternal dance between living in the physical and the spirit.  About the dialogue between the higher self, yourself and Source.
  • Call it the Universe, Spirit, God, Wakan Tanka, Higher Power, Buddha or Tao but I became connected to my Pole Star card and was led through the dark, tangled wood.
  • Identified and confronted the Guardian in a very big “leap from the Lion’s Head” (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).  During it, I was terrified but knew that as long as I stuck to my connection to what I knew was right and true that I would be alright.  I think I went through around three panic attacks during this time period.  Regardless, I stuck to what I knew was True, had Faith and I succeeded.

And, today, on the Solstice, standing in a stone circle underneath cawing crows and watching the sun rise over a distant hillside on a beautiful and cold winter morning, as expected, I hit the Eight of Vessels card.  Rebirth.

I had written this about the spread back on Halloween.  “This was going to be a very powerful time IF I listened.  A time of great potential.   Themes included Rebirth, Love, Water/Emotional energy, Feminine knowledge and guidance.”  Well, I listened.  I applied what I learned and what I saw coming from the spread.  I paid attention.

Solstice

As I stood on the hill this morning (making it to the location I wanted to be at JUST as the sun crested the far horizon) I cried joyful, gratitude filled tears at the beauty of the world all around me.  A world that I was a part of and that was a part of me.   And, I was more than just happy, I really did feel reborn.

I was also absolutely exhausted.

I will be returning here to talk more about the past several weeks.  There is a lot of change to discuss, not only with my work with Earth energy but with my work with divination tools.  Everything is different.  I have a lot to digest and to share but, as it’s officially the holidays with family and friends and I am in the middle of a career transition to boot, I may have to wait until the first of the year.  Till then, as I continue my conversation with Source, I will share what I can and when it is allowed by energy and time.

Be well and a blessed Solstice/Yule/ Axial-Tilt Holiday season to all of you!

Questing Path Spread

As Solstice finished I began to look ahead to Lammas.  I wanted to do a reading which would help me understand what I was to work on during this time period, what was to come next?  I felt very strongly about having a “quest” or an assignment for me to pursue which would also be in conjunction with the energies of Lammas.

I looked over the internet and through a few of my tarot books.  None of the spreads I found felt right and I knew I was going to need to design my own spread.  The first thing I do when designing a spread is to get a blank piece of paper and write out aspects of what I want to cover in the reading.  Not all of them make it and many get combined into a single position.  I also like to keep the number of position totals to either 5 or 7 for manageability.

I liked what I read about the Camelot Oracle and it’s pathway cards and I decided to use it as inspiration.  I wanted a card to represent the “type” of path before me as I headed towards Lammas.  A descriptor card that would show more with it’s images and feelings evoked then the actual meaning from the book.  I also wanted to know who or what my allies would be along the way and what challenges or experiences stood before me.  I also wanted to know where the path led.  What was the destination?  Again, like the path card, I wanted it to be more of a descriptor-style of card.

I wanted a reading that felt “different” from the standard past, present, future set-up.  I fiddled with things for around an hour before I came up with the simple spread below.

QuestngPathSpread

I used the pendulum to dowse the sequencing of the card pulls.  I do believe that it will need a bit of tweaking here or there and so I fully expect a Questing Path 2.0 version soon enough.

Here is the description of each position.

1. The Path – This is a descriptor card and you should look at the overall image of the card to help describe your path.  You can also find a keyword for the card and use it to fill in the blank on the phrase “The Path of _____ .” (See below for an example of this.)

2. Mid-Point Navigation – This card points to a midway marker or event between the beginning of the path and the destination. This is not a descriptor card.  This could be a direct challenge or it could be an experience I was to look for along the way.

3. The Destination – Again, another descriptor card.  Look at the image on the card and where the scene is that is taking place.  Given that this spread is for Lammas, I’m looking for not only the feel of the card but a location where I might want to acknowledge Lammas when it arrives.

4 and 5.  Allies Along the Way – This card would point to energies and entities along the way that I could call on for clarity, support and assistance.  They would remind me of my strengths and my experience and might also be individuals, physical or non-physical, that I might encounter.

6 and 7. Challenges – These two cards would show me not only where the sticky points were going to be but also how to identify my greatest teachers on the path from here to there.

Let’s take a look at what they say.
